AFC Bournemouth's first European campaign is now a perfect one. A 3–1 win at Sparta Prague on Thursday night made it four wins from four in the Europa League league phase, 12 points, and second place in the table — sealed by three goals from three substitutes.

Sparta led first, through Ebrima Singhateh on 35 minutes, in front of their own crowd. The match turned on the bench and on a red card: Sparta's Tobias Guddal was sent off, and Bournemouth's substitutes scored all three goals — Tyler Adams on 57 minutes, Evanilson on 81, and Rayan in stoppage time. It is seven straight wins in all competitions for Bournemouth, in a season that was supposed to be about surviving a first European schedule, not topping it.

Palace's Ninety-First Minute

At Selhurst Park, Crystal Palace spent most of the night losing and the last of it rescuing. Hoffenheim led from the 7th minute through Alexander Prass. Adam Wharton was sent off on 77 minutes, leaving Palace ten men down and a goal down — and Daichi Kamada equalised at 90+1' anyway. Palace have five points from four games: one win, two draws, one defeat, and a point salvaged in the shape of a small escape.

The third English club in action had no such rescue. Sunderland lost 2–0 at home to Dinamo Zagreb, Stojkovic scoring on 22 minutes and Beljo on 39 — a defeat that leaves their league-phase position to be repaired in the remaining fixtures.

The Wider Night

Elsewhere in the same roundup, AC Milan's campaign took its worst hit yet: a 2–0 home defeat to Ferencvaros, which Reuters reported left Milan's hopes of advancing suffering a blow. The league phase's midpoint is now passed, and its table has a shape nobody predicted in August: Bournemouth, European debutants, are the ones with the perfect record — four played, four won, and a knockout place moving from possibility towards arithmetic with every Thursday like this one.

The Bournemouth story has a statistical edge worth stating plainly: in the league-phase format, 12 points from four matches is the kind of return that historically puts a club within touching distance of the knockout rounds with four fixtures still to play — and Bournemouth have done it in the club's first European campaign, with a squad rotation that produced three substitute scorers in a single away win. Sparta, a club with decades of European nights behind it, were beaten at home by a side playing its fourth European away day ever.

For Palace, the point has a different value. Five points from four games keeps them inside the play-off places argument rather than the automatic one, but the manner of it — ten men, a goal down, a 91st-minute equaliser from a Japanese international bought for nights like this — is the kind that travels. Selhurst Park has had European football for one season. Thursday night it sounded, by every account, like it had always had it.

Four matches remain in the league phase. Bournemouth's arithmetic from here is the arithmetic of the already-qualified in everything but ink.

  • Sunderland lost 0-2 at home to Dinamo Zagreb; AC Milan lost 0-2 at home to Ferencvaros.
