The Brissett Trade Is Still Not Official — But Arizona Has Paid To Make It Work

The Cardinals converted $2.7 million of Jacoby Brissett's salary into a signing bonus to grease the deal. As of Thursday night it remains, in the Ravens' own words, a 'reported trade' — which is why a rookie started in Baltimore.

The trade that is supposed to fix Baltimore's quarterback emergency is still not a trade. As of Thursday evening, the Jacoby Brissett deal between Arizona and Baltimore remained unofficial — NFL Network's Ian Rapoport said on Thursday night's GameDay Kickoff that it "still should be done tomorrow" and that Brissett is on pace to start in Week 10; the Ravens' own site continues to call it a "reported trade" expected to be finalised this weekend.

What did happen Thursday is the money. ESPN's Field Yates reported that Arizona converted $2.7 million of Brissett's remaining $5.4 million salary into a signing bonus to facilitate the deal — the Cardinals paying half the remaining contract to move a player they benched on Monday. On the reported figures, Baltimore would owe $2.7 million if the trade completed Thursday, or about $2.43 million if it completes after Thursday night's game, which is the expected path; Spotrac's accounting puts the post-game figure at $2.435 million including $285,000 in incentives.

The Quarterback Baltimore Is Buying

Brissett is 33, in his 11th season, with 73 career starts. He started eight games for Arizona this year before being demoted to No. 3 on Monday, after Gardner Minshew replaced him during the Dallas game. His line before the benching: 63.3 percent completions, 1,719 yards, 10 touchdowns, 7 interceptions. He is a pending free agent — a rental, priced like one, in a season where Baltimore's alternatives ran out in a single Sunday.

Why Thursday Night Looked Like That

The pending status is the whole explanation for Thursday night in Baltimore. With Lamar Jackson on injured reserve with a thumb injury and Tyler Huntley out for the season with turf toe, and the Brissett paperwork unsigned, the Ravens' quarterback against Jacksonville was undrafted rookie Joe Fagnano, making his first NFL start. The expected Brissett debut is Monday, November 16, against the Los Angeles Chargers, on Monday Night Football — ten days of practice, on the reported timeline, between the signature and the start.

Nothing about Thursday's reporting changes the shape of the deal — only its date. The money has moved; the quarterback, officially, has not. Until the league office has the paperwork, Baltimore's most important player is a reported one.

The salary conversion is the tell that the deal is real even though it is unfinished. Teams do not restructure a contract — converting $2.7 million into a signing bonus the selling club absorbs — for a transaction they expect to collapse. What remains, on the reporting, is process: paperwork, league approval, the physical and administrative steps that turn a reported trade into a roster move. Rapoport's Thursday-night framing put the completion on Friday, with the weekend as the outer edge on the Ravens' own account.

For Arizona, the conversion closes a short, expensive chapter: eight starts, a mid-season benching, and half the remaining money paid to send the quarterback to a contender's emergency. For Baltimore, the price of the delay was Thursday night itself — a prime-time game played with a rookie third-stringer while the replacement's contract sat in a league inbox. The Ravens' season now depends on the gap between those two facts being measured in days.
