Charli XCX has been cast in Martin Scorsese’s next film. Casting reports published on Monday said the singer will make a cameo appearance in What Happens at Night, the director’s gothic psychological drama starring Leonardo DiCaprio and Jennifer Lawrence. Details of her character have not been revealed, and no release date for the film has been announced.

The Film

What Happens at Night is based on Peter Cameron’s 2020 novel of the same name. It follows an American married couple who travel to a small, snowy European town to adopt a baby. Their visit takes an unsettling turn as a series of mysterious encounters begins to challenge their understanding of what is real. Alongside DiCaprio and Lawrence, the cast includes Mads Mikkelsen, Patricia Clarkson and Jared Harris.

The Pairing At The Top

The film is the seventh feature collaboration between Scorsese and DiCaprio, following Gangs of New York (2002), The Aviator, The Departed, Shutter Island, The Wolf of Wall Street and Killers of the Flower Moon. Lawrence’s connection runs through the producer’s chair: Scorsese produced her 2025 film Die My Love. What Happens at Night puts the two stars in front of his camera together for the first time.

Her Screen Run

The cameo continues a deliberate expansion from music into acting. Charli XCX’s recent screen projects include The Moment, 100 Nights of Hero, Erupcja and I Want Your Sex, and she appeared at the 2025 Toronto International Film Festival for the film Sacrifice. The Scorsese production is the highest-profile director she has worked with, and it arrives while her music career is at its commercial peak following the success of her 2024 album Brat.

From Brat To The Big Screen

Charli XCX, born Charlotte Aitchison in Cambridge, England, in 1992, comes to the casting off the biggest run of her career. Her 2024 album Brat became a cultural phenomenon — its title passed into general use as “Brat summer” — and at the 2025 BRIT Awards she won five prizes, including British Artist of the Year and Album of the Year. The acting work has run alongside the music rather than after it: the four features she completed in quick succession were all shot while Brat and its remix album were still on the charts. The Scorsese film is a step up in company. The Departed, the third of his collaborations with DiCaprio, won the Academy Award for Best Picture and brought Scorsese the only directing Oscar of his career.

What Is Not Known

The reports did not say when filming takes place, where the production will shoot, or how large the cameo is. A cameo credit in a Scorsese film has historically ranged from a single scene to a running presence; the production has not commented beyond the casting itself.
