NEW YORK — Harry Styles ends the biggest residency of his career on Halloween night, and on Friday he spent its penultimate show dressing up as himself — twice over. For the first of two “Harryween” concerts closing his 30-night “Together, Together” residency at Madison Square Garden, Styles opened dressed as Elvis Presley, then changed into a recreation of the outfit he wore at sixteen for his X Factor audition in 2010, and sang the song that started everything: Stevie Wonder’s “Isn’t She Lovely.” The 30th and final Garden show follows on Saturday night.
Elvis First, Then The Bakery Boy
Styles took the stage on Friday in the King’s signature white jumpsuit, complete with cape and gold sunglasses, while his backing band and dancers dressed as versions of Styles himself from across his career — looks drawn from his Coachella, Grammys and Met Gala appearances, NME reported. Later in the show came the second costume: a grey cardigan over a white T-shirt, a yellow scarf, brown khakis and an audition number pinned to his front, recreating what he wore in 2010, when he arrived at The X Factor auditions from Holmes Chapel, Cheshire, where he worked part-time in a bakery. He sang “Isn’t She Lovely” — the song that carried him through that audition — and joked to the Garden crowd, in a line quoted from the original audition: “I work in a bakery.” Extended footage released by The X Factor in 2022 showed that Simon Cowell first stopped the teenage Styles mid-way through Train’s “Hey, Soul Sister” and asked to hear him unaccompanied; the Wonder song, sung a cappella, put him through, on the way to being grouped with Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne and Louis Tomlinson to form One Direction.
A Tradition Called Harryween
The costumed Halloween shows are a Styles tradition of his own making. He first held two Harryween concerts at Madison Square Garden in 2021 — dressing as Dorothy from The Wizard of Oz on the opening night, and as a clown the following evening, covering Britney Spears’ “Toxic” — and revived the idea in Los Angeles in 2022 as Danny Zuko from Grease. Friday’s lighter moments were widely shared: dressed as Elvis, Styles told the crowd the scariest thing about Halloween was the price of coffee in New York — “It’s a cappuccino. It can’t be $10. It can’t be!” Consequence reported. His fiancée Zoë Kravitz was in the audience alongside Riley Keough, Elvis Presley’s granddaughter, according to reports from the show.
Thirty Nights At The Garden
The residency, which began in August in support of his fourth solo album Kiss All The Time. Disco, Occasionally — released in March to a four-star NME review — drew a reported 11.5 million presale registrations on Ticketmaster, according to Billboard. This week alone, Styles performed “Ever Since New York” for the first time in four years and paid tribute to his late One Direction bandmate Liam Payne with a new song, “What Is Enough,” NME reported. Manhattan marked the run formally: Borough President Brad Hoylman-Sigal proclaimed October 30 Harry Styles Appreciation Day in the borough. For fans without a ticket to Saturday’s finale, Spotify is staging “Spotify Presents: Harryween,” a free dance party in New York on Saturday evening curated by Styles with Spotify and Despacio, the sound system built by James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem and Stephen and David Dewaele of Soulwax, with early invitations sent to his top listeners on the platform, Music Ally reported.
What Comes Next
The New York run closes on Saturday night with the second Harryween show; from there, the “Together, Together” world tour heads to Australia, with concerts in Melbourne and Sydney in November and December, and further dates announced for 2027, including additional Wembley Stadium concerts. NME’s five-star review of the tour in Amsterdam praised its sense of community. Sixteen years after a bakery worker from Cheshire sang for his place on a talent show, the costume he chose for the biggest room in America was the one he started in.
