Jamie Miller has become the first Welsh artist to top the UK singles chart in 15 years. The 29-year-old from Pontprennau in Cardiff reached No. 1 on Friday with “Babydoll,” narrowly beating Tate McRae’s “Housewife,” which entered the chart at No. 2, BBC Wales reported, citing the Official Charts Company.
The Official Charts Company said Miller is the first Welsh artist at No. 1 since Sian Evans, whose vocal feature on DJ Fresh’s “Louder” topped the chart in 2011. He is also the first solo male Welsh artist to reach No. 1 since Shakin’ Stevens, whose “Merry Christmas Everyone” was No. 1 in 1985 — 41 years ago, according to BBC Wales and Official Charts.
Miller told Official Charts: “I don’t even know what to say other than thank you so much for getting me Number 1, this is the biggest thing that’s ever happened to me in my life.” BBC Wales carried a fuller version of the same reaction on Sunday, ending: “I love you guys.”
“Babydoll” was released on August 7. BBC Wales reported that Miller had considered quitting music months before the song came out, and that it exploded after the actress Jennifer Love Hewitt posted videos featuring the track. Those videos sparked a TikTok dance trend, BBC Wales reported. The song has also reached No. 1 on the US iTunes pop chart and has given Miller his first entry on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States, according to BBC Wales. It climbed to No. 2 last week and narrowly missed the top spot before reaching No. 1 on Friday, BBC Wales reported.
Miller launched his career nearly a decade ago, at 19, finishing third on the sixth series of The Voice UK in 2017, BBC Wales reported. He has previously told BBC Wales that his father is an Uber driver in Cardiff.
Miller has also recorded a separate version of “Babydoll” with Antonio Cipriano, a star of the series Off Campus, after first joking about the idea on social media, BBC Wales reported. The Press Association reported that the song’s climb up the chart followed the release of the version recorded with Cipriano. On Sunday, two days after the chart result was announced, Miller performed the song on BBC One’s Strictly Come Dancing results show, The Sun reported.
Behind Miller and McRae, the rest of the singles chart top five was completed by Olivia Rodrigo’s remixed version of “Expectations” with Chappell Roan at No. 3, Ashe’s “Stop The Wedding” at No. 4 and Sienna Spiro’s “Great Expectation” at No. 5, the Press Association reported. On the albums chart, the Irish band Fontaines D.C. scored their second No. 1 album with Dopamine Chamber, which the Press Association reported was the third-biggest opening week for an album in 2026, behind only Harry Styles’s Kiss All The Time, Disco, Occasionally and Rodrigo’s album, and the fastest-selling Irish studio album in 15 years, since Snow Patrol’s Fallen Empires in 2011. Olivia Rodrigo’s album You Seem Pretty Sad For A Girl So In Love placed at No. 2 on the albums chart, the Press Association reported.
