John Legend released his new album, Muse, on Friday, October 23, through Republic Records. The 16-track record was produced in full and co-written by Pharrell Williams, and it is the first complete album the two men have made together in a friendship Universal Music puts at more than twenty years. Essence included Muse in its October 23 roundup of the week’s best new music.
The project took shape after Legend sang on “The Birds Don’t Sing,” a track from Clipse’s comeback album Let God Sort ’Em Out, which Williams produced. Universal Music says Legend’s vocal on that song inspired Williams to build an entire record around his voice. The two then wrote and recorded largely at Williams’ studio inside the Louis Vuitton headquarters in Paris, where Williams serves as the house’s men’s creative director.
The sound pairs strings and horns with 808s, weaving together gospel, standards, doo-wop, classic soul, Afrobeats and hip-hop, according to Universal Music; the label’s announcement also names Nina Simone, Nat King Cole and Marvin Gaye among the record’s influences. “Pharrell’s idea from the beginning was that we would create something with all of these classic, cinematic elements, almost like a Black James Bond feel to it,” Legend said, “but with a modern backbeat at its foundation.”
Making the record meant handing over a kind of control Legend usually keeps. “I recorded some songs on this album that he fully wrote, which I almost never do,” Legend said. When the final mixes were submitted, Williams sent him a text: “Thank you for trusting me. Thank you for your patience.” Legend added: “It’s not about winning the argument or ego. It’s about the music winning. Every battle should be won by the art.”
Legend told People he set out to move beyond the piano-driven ballads most associated with him: “I wanted to shake up the formula and do something fresh and new.” In an interview with the Associated Press, he described dialing back his trademark vocal power on several tracks in favor of a looser, more conversational delivery at Williams’ urging. The AP also noted that Jay-Z once told Legend, “You’re our voice.”
Williams sings on six of the sixteen tracks — the title track, “Her,” “Get Back,” “Are You OK,” “Next Time” and “Fireflies” — according to People, and Clipse feature on “Bodies on the Floor.” Three songs arrived ahead of the album: the lead single, “Daylight”; “Pray For Ya,” the gospel-tinged preview that soundtracked Louis Vuitton’s Fall-Winter 2026 men’s show; and “Fireflies.” Music videos for the singles were directed by Paul Hunter of Prettybird.
The songs trace one couple through a full arc. The title track follows a tumultuous relationship against a backdrop of Paris, while “Her” draws on the music Legend’s father raised him on, and “Get Back” builds its soul on big horns and strings. “Are You OK?” recasts a couple’s argument as tough love, and “Bodies on the Floor” lets the language of gang warfare bleed into a song about a toxic, magnetic bond. “Part of me was writing with literal gang wars in mind, a vicious cycle of harm and retaliation,” Legend said. “Fireflies,” by contrast, reflects on inequality, loss and resilience.
Legend has also launched The Muse Gallery, an interactive experience on his official website built like a virtual museum, with themed rooms of music, merchandise and video, and a feature inviting fans to suggest cities for him to perform in.
Muse is Legend’s twelfth studio album, by Universal Music’s count, and his first since My Favorite Dream in 2024. His label biography lists 13 Grammy Awards, an Academy Award, a Golden Globe Award, a Tony Award and four Emmy Awards, making him one of the EGOT winners. In 2025 he toured behind the twentieth-anniversary reissue of his debut, Get Lifted, and in 2026 he returned to NBC’s The Voice as a coach for its twenty-ninth season.
Next comes the stage. Legend has written his first original score for a musical, Imitation of Life, a co-production of The Shed and the National Black Theatre with a book by the Pulitzer Prize winner Lynn Nottage and direction by Whitney White. Adrienne Warren stars; Legend and Mike Jackson produce through Get Lifted Film Co. Previews begin November 21 at The Shed in New York, ahead of a December 3 opening, with the run scheduled through January 3, 2027.
