Netflix released all eight episodes of Lupin Part 4 on Friday, October 23, and the French thriller reached No. 1 on the streamer’s global Top 10 chart the next day, passing the mystery series Below, according to FlixPatrol chart data reported by Men’s Journal and MovieWeb. It is the series’ first new chapter in three years.
On FlixPatrol’s worldwide chart for Sunday, October 25, Lupin stood at No. 1 with 648 points. Behind it came Nobody Wants This, whose third season had been released on October 22, with 590 points, and Below with 588. Doctor X: Mafia in White and The Diplomat completed the top five. FlixPatrol compiles its chart from Netflix’s daily Top 10 lists in the countries where the service operates.
Part 4 ends the longest wait in the series’ history. Part 3 premiered on October 5, 2023, three years ago, and at eight episodes Part 4 is also the longest of the four parts: Parts 1 and 2 ran to five episodes each, and Part 3 to seven. All four parts are now streaming, 25 episodes in total.
Omar Sy returns in the lead as Assane Diop, and this time he also stands behind the camera: Sy serves as co-showrunner of Part 4 alongside Louis Leterrier, who has directed episodes of the series since its first part. The series was created by George Kay and François Uzan and is produced by Gaumont, the French studio founded in 1895.
Diop is a gentleman thief whose disguises, escapes and codes are modeled on Arsène Lupin, the character created by the French author Maurice Leblanc in 1905. Part 4 opens four years after the end of Part 3. Assane is in prison and intends to serve out his sentence, keeping a promise made to his son to travel and meet their family in Senegal. The plan is overturned by an announcement signed by Lupin, promising simultaneous heists at several museums. The thefts go ahead despite heightened security, footage appears to place Assane inside one of the museums, and Captain Sofia Belkacem is seriously injured during one of the robberies. Assane proclaims his innocence: a copycat is working in his name. To unmask the imitator and clear himself, he has to escape, and put the Lupin costume on once more.
Ludivine Sagnier returns as Claire Laurent, Soufiane Guerrab as the detective Youssef Guédira, Antoine Gouy as Benjamin Férel, Assane’s oldest friend, and Shirine Boutella as Belkacem. Théo Christine takes over the role of Assane’s son Raoul, played in the first three parts by Etan Simon — a recasting made as the character moves from childhood into adulthood, which Sy has explained in interviews was needed for the deeper emotional stakes of the new story.
The audience for a fourth part was never in doubt on the numbers. Lupin has been one of Netflix’s defining non-English-language successes since Part 1 premiered on January 8, 2021; Part 2 followed in June of that year. Gaumont puts the series’ worldwide audience at more than 100 million views. On Rotten Tomatoes the series holds a 98 percent critics’ score overall, and Part 4 stands at 100 percent from its first reviews, matching the score held by Part 3. Reviewing the new part for The Guardian, Micha Frazer-Carroll called Sy “magnetic” in the role.
What follows has not been settled in public. As of Saturday, October 24, Netflix had not officially ordered a Part 5, and Part 4 was not marketed or presented as the final part of the series.
