Hideki Matsui is going home to manage. Reports on Friday named Matsui as the new manager of the Yomiuri Giants — the Tokyo club where he starred for a decade before joining the New York Yankees in 2003. The appointment was carried in ESPN’s news feed with Associated Press reporting on Friday.
Matsui hit 332 home runs for Yomiuri and won three Japan Series titles there before crossing the Pacific. In New York he became the first Japanese-born player to win a World Series MVP award, driving in six runs in the Yankees’ clinching Game 6 in 2009. He takes over the most famous job in Japanese baseball — at the club that made him famous first.
