Man Arrested After Pulling a Knife in a Dispute With a Crew Member on the ‘Miami Vice ’85’ Set in Brooklyn

Alex Perez, 23, of Brooklyn, was arrested late Friday night after police say he displayed a knife during a verbal dispute with a crew member near the Washington Cemetery set of “Miami Vice ’85,” Universal’s reboot starring Michael B. Jordan as Ricardo Tubbs and Austin Butler as Sonny Crockett. No one was injured, the NYPD said. The published reports disagree on the crew member’s age, on the corner where it happened and on the exact time.

A 23-year-old Brooklyn man was arrested late Friday night after police said he displayed a knife during a verbal dispute with a crew member on the Brooklyn set of “Miami Vice ’85,” Universal’s reboot of the 1980s television series starring Michael B. Jordan and Austin Butler. The New York Police Department identified the man as Alex Perez, 23, of Brooklyn, and said he was “taken into custody without incident, and the knife was recovered.” No injuries were reported. The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that the incident occurred on the “Miami Vice ’85” set.

According to the NYPD account given to the New York Post, Perez disrupted the production near Washington Cemetery at about 11:15 p.m. on Friday, October 23, and pulled out the knife during a verbal dispute with a production staffer who feared for his safety. The Post reported that the knife was a large butcher knife, citing TMZ. TMZ published footage showing Perez being escorted off the set by a staffer before he pulled a large knife from his sweatshirt.

The published reports do not agree on three details. The Post, citing the NYPD, put the confrontation near Bay Parkway and McDonald Avenue; NBC News and TheWrap placed it in the area of Avenue N and McDonald Avenue, also by Washington Cemetery. The Post said the crew member was a 43-year-old man; TheWrap and NBC News reported that he was 42, and an NYPD spokesperson gave The Hollywood Reporter the same age, 42. On the time, the Post reported about 11:15 p.m., while TMZ reported that an officer arrested Perez at 11:17 p.m.

TMZ, citing police, reported that Perez had begun disrupting the filming at about 11 p.m. by running across the set, and that he was arrested by an officer who was working security on the shoot. The Post reported that Jordan had also filmed portions of the remake earlier this month in Wayne, New Jersey, alongside co-stars Danny Ramirez and Dominic Sessa.

Perez was charged with second-degree menacing and fourth-degree criminal possession of a weapon, police said. NBC News reported that it was not immediately clear whether Perez had retained an attorney. TMZ reported that Perez has five prior arrests, involving alleged gang-related activity, assault with a firearm and burglary, among other offenses.

“Miami Vice ’85” is Universal’s reimagining of the NBC crime drama that starred Don Johnson as James “Sonny” Crockett and Philip Michael Thomas as Ricardo Tubbs. The new film is directed by Joseph Kosinski, whose credits include “Top Gun: Maverick” and “F1.” Jordan plays Ricardo Tubbs and Butler plays Sonny Crockett. The cast also includes Alden Ehrenreich, Whitney Peak, Camila Morrone, Danny Ramirez, John Leguizamo, Andrew Schulz and Walton Goggins. The film is scheduled to reach theaters on May 19, 2028, according to TheWrap.

The production has been filming across New York City and New Jersey, and Universal released the first-look images of Butler as Crockett and Jordan as Tubbs earlier this month. Jordan was photographed filming scenes in Brooklyn on Friday, the day of the arrest. No published account establishes whether Jordan or Butler was present at the confrontation itself, and neither actor has been identified as a target of the alleged threat.
