Street Fighter Wins Its First Weekend With $30.8 Million

One weekend was enough. Street Fighter, Paramount’s video-game adaptation produced with Legendary Entertainment and Capcom, opened at No. 1 on the weekend of October 16–18 with $30,775,377 — and that single weekend places it third on the combined chart for October 2–18, ahead of films that have been in release all month. All figures are Box Office Mojo’s.

The debut is the second-biggest single weekend posted by any film this October, behind only Verity’s $32.0 million opening two weeks earlier, and it arrived in a crowded frame: the same weekend brought the documentary You Can See Everything to No. 2 with $15,601,418 and pushed holdovers Other Mommy and Verity down the chart. A video-game property carrying a full weekend against that field is the fact of the frame.

The film is directed by Kitao Sakurai and runs 1 hour 59 minutes, rated PG-13. Andrew Koji plays Ryu; Noah Centineo plays Ken Masters; Callina Liang plays Chun-Li; Jason Momoa plays Blanka. The casting spans the game’s best-known fighters, with Momoa — the top-billed name — in the green, electric role that has anchored the property’s imagery since the arcade era.

The official synopsis sets the film in 1993: estranged fighters Ryu and Ken Masters are thrown back into combat when Chun-Li recruits them for the World Warrior Tournament, and behind the tournament lies a conspiracy that forces them to face each other and the demons of their past. The period setting matches the franchise’s arcade peak, when the game’s tournament format defined competitive fighting games.

What happens next decides the film’s place in the month. Game adaptations live or die on their second weekend: the opening crowd is the fan base, and the drop-off measures everyone else. Street Fighter needs a hold anywhere near the 40-to-50-percent range to press Verity’s combined lead by month’s end — and with the Halloween weekend ahead, it will be fighting horror for the same screens.
