— The Milwaukee Brewers were three outs from the first World Series title in franchise history. The Tampa Bay Rays scored twice in the bottom of the 12th inning instead, winning Game 4, 4–3, on pinch-hitter Ben Williamson’s walk-off single to stay alive in a Series they still trail 3–1.

Three Outs From A Title

Rookie shortstop Cooper Pratt, capping a four-hit night, led off the top of the 12th with a home run off Ian Seymour (2–0), driving a 2–2 sweeper over the wall in left-centre to give Milwaukee a 3–2 lead. Pratt became the first rookie to hit an extra-inning home run in the World Series, the Associated Press reported, and Milwaukee’s bullpen had thrown eight consecutive scoreless innings. In the bottom half, Antonio Senzatela took the mound and Junior Caminero reached on a throwing error by third baseman Joey Ortiz. Shane Drohan (0–1) relieved and did not retire a batter: Liam Hicks singled to put runners at the corners, Jonny DeLuca singled up the middle to score pinch-runner Cedric Mullins and tie the game 3–3, Chandler Simpson singled to load the bases against a five-man infield, and Williamson — 1 for 15 in the postseason before the at-bat — chopped a single over first baseman Jake Bauers and into right field to score pinch-runner Nick Fortes and end it. The crowd was 40,514.

Twice Tied

Tampa Bay scored first in the second inning, when DeLuca reached on a fielder’s choice and came home on Simpson’s double into the right-field corner off starter Dustin May. Milwaukee levelled in the fourth: Sal Frelick singled with two outs against Griffin Jax and scored on Pratt’s double into the left-field corner. The Rays retook the lead in the bottom of the fourth when Caminero singled to chase May, then scored after third baseman David Hamilton’s throw sailed past first for an error. Hamilton made up for it in the fifth, driving an 0–2 fastball from Jax into the right-field seats to tie the game 2–2 — his second home run of the postseason. It stayed 2–2 through the ninth, when Simpson made a leaping catch at the wall, and through two scoreless extra innings.

The Numbers

Pratt finished with four hits, including the RBI double in the fourth and the go-ahead homer in the 12th. Jackson Chourio had two hits for Milwaukee and has 10 hits in the first four games of the Series — a feat previously managed only by Babe Ruth, in 1928, Reuters reported. Simpson had three hits for Tampa Bay, including the run-scoring double that opened the scoring. The line: Milwaukee 3 runs, 8 hits, 2 errors; Tampa Bay 4 runs, 9 hits, 1 error. The loss ended Milwaukee’s eight-game postseason winning streak.

What The History Says

Tampa Bay is only the fifth of 26 teams that fell behind 3–0 in a World Series to win Game 4; the previous four all lost Game 5, the AP reported. Of 43 teams to trail 3–0 in any best-of-seven postseason series, exactly one has come all the way back: the 2004 Boston Red Sox, in the American League Championship Series against the New York Yankees. It was the fourth game in World Series history in which a team staved off elimination with an extra-inning victory, USA Today reported. “We’ve got a lot of fight in us. We’re never going to shy away,” Simpson said. “We were going to keep fighting until the end — the last inning, the last out, the last play, the last pitch.” Williamson: “It just shows the resiliency of this group. We continue to fight, and that’s been the motto this series and this full season, is just fight.” Milwaukee captain Christian Yelich: “If you want to win a championship, you’ve got to survive some hard things. It’s supposed to be hard. It’s supposed to test you. We understand that.”

Game 5, Wednesday

Game 5 is Wednesday night at Tropicana Field. Milwaukee will start Jacob Misiorowski, the National League Cy Young Award favourite, manager Pat Murphy confirmed; Misiorowski was not available for Game 4. Rays manager Kevin Cash said he had not decided on a starter. Caminero left the game after the 12th-inning error sequence with an ailing left foot and was replaced by Mullins; Caminero said he will play Wednesday. “He’ll play tomorrow on one leg. I’ll make sure of it,” Cash said. Milwaukee needs one win in three remaining chances for its first title; Tampa Bay must win three straight.

Game 4 — In Short

Tampa Bay 4, Milwaukee 3, in 12 innings. Cooper Pratt’s 12th-inning homer put the Brewers three outs from their first World Series title; an Ortiz error and four straight singles off Shane Drohan — the last by pinch-hitter Ben Williamson — scored twice and forced Game 5. Milwaukee still leads the Series 3–1. Game 5 is Wednesday night in St. Petersburg, Misiorowski pitching for Milwaukee.
