Sandra Hüller will appear briefly in Avengers: Doomsday, The Hollywood Reporter confirmed on Friday. The part is a cameo, and no details of the role have been disclosed. Marvel Studios, which makes the film, declined to comment. Doomsday opens in theaters on December 18.

The confirmation follows weeks of rumor. Hüller’s name had appeared on the British Stunt Register, and stunt performer Stevie Parker was listed as having stood in for the actress on the Doomsday set. Parker’s listing also named two other performers she doubled for on the film, Katya Hazel Boirand and Josie Pocock — the detail that set the speculation running.

What Hüller plays is unknown, and the theories circulating among fans are speculation, not reporting. The leading guesses place her among the Latverian Witches, a group of hooded figures tied to Doctor Doom’s homeland, or as Cynthia von Doom, the villain’s mother. Marvel displayed color-coded Latverian Witch robes at San Diego Comic-Con this summer, and on October 3 the studio showed a poster at Comic-Con Málaga of Doom standing before three masked figures, under the line “Witching season has arrived.” In the comics, Cynthia von Doom is a Romani sorceress whose death sits at the center of her son’s story. None of the casting theories has been confirmed, and Marvel has given no indication which, if any, is correct.

Avengers: Doomsday is directed by Anthony and Joe Russo and is built around Robert Downey Jr.’s return to Marvel as the villain Victor von Doom, after a decade playing Iron Man. The confirmed cast includes Chris Hemsworth, Chris Evans — back as Steve Rogers — Anthony Mackie, Paul Rudd, Pedro Pascal, Vanessa Kirby and Florence Pugh, together with Patrick Stewart, Ian McKellen and James Marsden from the X-Men films, Tom Hiddleston and Channing Tatum. The film reportedly runs two hours and 45 minutes, and Marvel released a second trailer on Saturday built around Thor and Rogers. Doomsday opens the same day as Dune: Part Three and sets up Avengers: Secret Wars, due in December 2027.

Hüller, 48, is a German actress from Suhl. Her international breakthrough was Toni Erdmann in 2016, which premiered at Cannes and won her the European Film Award for best actress. In 2023 she headlined two of the year’s most honored films in a single season: Anatomy of a Fall, the Cannes Palme d’Or winner, in which she plays a writer on trial for her husband’s death — the performance that brought her the Academy Award nomination for best actress, in a film that won the Oscar for best original screenplay — and The Zone of Interest, in which she plays Hedwig Höss, the wife of the Auschwitz commandant, a film that won Academy Awards for best international feature and best sound.

This year she has starred opposite Ryan Gosling in Project Hail Mary and with Tom Cruise in Digger. Doomsday is her first Marvel film, and it arrives while the cast is still growing: with two months to go before release, the film’s confirmed roster runs to nearly three dozen names, and Hüller’s is the latest added to it.
