— Jesús de Miguel, a 30-year-old striker for CD Tenerife, died on Tuesday morning, a day after a collision with the opposing goalkeeper in a Spanish second-division match left him with a cardiac arrest and injuries from which he never recovered. The club announced his death at 8 a.m. “Racked with pain, with a lump in our throats and unable to believe that this is true, from CD Tenerife we communicate the tragic passing of Jesús de Miguel Alameda,” the club said.

Seven Minutes Into Stoppage Time

The injury came seven minutes into stoppage time on Monday night, with Tenerife’s match against FC Andorra at the Estadio Heliodoro Rodríguez López level at 2–2. Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono had rushed far out of his area, towards the halfway line, to clear a long ball played forward for De Miguel. The two collided at speed, and Owono’s knee struck the striker in the chest. De Miguel collapsed and lay motionless on the pitch. Medical staff treated him for more than five minutes before he was taken to hospital by ambulance, with players from both teams visibly distressed. Owono was sent off immediately — the red card was for a challenge using excessive force while the ball was in play — and the match was abandoned. Owono, who had been walking off after his dismissal, ran back onto the pitch when he saw the severity of the injury, and joined the players trying to help.

Stable, Then A Night-Time Decline

De Miguel was admitted to intensive care. His condition was described on Monday evening as stable despite its severity, although he was unconscious, critically ill and unable to breathe unassisted. Overnight his neurological condition deteriorated, and on Tuesday morning Tenerife announced that he had died. He had suffered a cardiac arrest following the collision. De Miguel was born in Madrid in 1996 and joined Tenerife from Castellón before the start of the 2025–26 season. The Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) suspended all football activities scheduled for Tuesday as a sign of respect and solidarity, including the postponement of two Copa del Rey matches.

A Routine Investigation, And Abuse Condemned By The Facts

Spain’s National Police have opened an investigation into possible involuntary manslaughter. Judicial authorities in the Canary Islands stressed that the step is routine: under Spanish law, any death deemed non-natural automatically triggers a judicial inquiry, and it does not imply that Owono is suspected of deliberately causing the injury. Owono, 25, an Alavés youth product who made 11 La Liga appearances as a backup before joining Andorra, was reported by Cadena COPE to have been devastated, crying and praying in the dressing room after the match. He has deactivated his Instagram account after receiving a torrent of abuse online; some fans had chanted “murderer” at him while De Miguel was receiving emergency treatment on the pitch. FC Andorra said in a statement: “With heavy hearts and devastated, we would like to send our most sincere condolences to the family of Jesús de Miguel, to all his colleagues and friends, and to CD Tenerife.”

Tenerife — In Short

CD Tenerife striker Jesús de Miguel, 30, died at 8 a.m. on Tuesday after a collision with FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono seven minutes into stoppage time of Monday’s Segunda División match, which was level at 2–2 and was abandoned. Owono, who had rushed to the halfway line to clear a long ball, was sent off for excessive force; his knee struck De Miguel in the chest, and the striker suffered a cardiac arrest. Initially stable but unconscious in intensive care, he deteriorated neurologically overnight. The Spanish federation suspended Tuesday’s football in his honour, and police opened the routine investigation Spanish law requires into a non-natural death.
