President Trump demanded on Thursday night that Rep. Ilhan Omar of Minnesota resign from Congress, saying she was sworn in under a “fake name.” He made the demand at a rally in Sioux City, Iowa, and repeated it in a Truth Social post at 11:20 p.m. ET.
The president’s post, in full on the point: “It was just revealed that Ilhan Omar’s name is not Ilhan Omar, the one she used to get elected and sworn into Congress, but rather, it’s an entirely different name, Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, and that her last name is, incredibly, also the exact name of her brother, Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, the person they said she married and had children with. When asked whether or not she married her brother, she said, ‘Not to my knowledge.’ In other words, she somehow didn’t know? Therefore, because she used a fake name to be sworn in, I assume she must IMMEDIATELY resign from Congress. Please inform the Speaker of the House of Representatives, James Michael Johnson, that the Dumocrat Party has just conceded her seat. Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, her real name, has openly admitted to FRAUD, and she will not be legally allowed to be a Member of this August Body from this point forth.” At the rally, he also declared: “The Republicans have just picked up a seat in the House.”
What the filing says. The claim rests on a Justice Department motion filed Wednesday, October 21, by the office of U.S. Attorney Jeanine Pirro, in the legal fight over unsealing the search-warrant materials for Omar’s Washington residence. It opens: “Before the Court are three Applications to unseal ex parte materials and proceedings related to a federal search warrant for the personal residence in the District of Columbia of Congresswoman Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, a/k/a Ilhan Abdullahi Omar.” The government’s position in the motion is that the warrant has not been fully executed and the materials should stay sealed for now; The New York Times and other organizations have asked for their release. “A/k/a” means “also known as.” The motion does not say why prosecutors used the name, and it makes no finding about Omar’s identity.
What the sources say. Fox News Digital reported that two people familiar with the investigation, including a law-enforcement source, said Ilhan Nur Said Elmi is her real name. A source familiar with the investigation told the New York Post that Elmi was her original surname. Asked about the filing, Attorney General Todd Blanche told the Post: “I don’t think [prosecutors] would make up names. Evidence that’s collected is used in motions.”
What Omar’s side says. A spokesperson for Omar told Fox News Digital: “This is completely false. Ilhan Omar is her real name,” and called the allegation a “desperate smear,” adding that it was “disgraceful that the media continues to give this lie oxygen.” In her first interview after the search of her home, on MS NOW with Chris Hayes on Wednesday, Omar called the brother allegation “insane”; asked directly whether she was related to her former husband, she answered, “Not to my knowledge.” Of the October 12 search itself, she has said: “This raid by Trump’s DHS is an outrageous abuse of power and an unprecedented escalation in the weaponization of federal law enforcement to target political enemies… The Congresswoman has done nothing wrong.”
The background in the reports. Omar, born in Somalia, became a U.S. citizen in 2000 and has represented Minnesota’s 5th District since 2019. Homeland Security Investigations agents searched her Washington home on October 12; the Post reported they took her phone, computer and a passport, and Fox News reported investigators obtained her DNA. The reported focus is whether she or her late father committed fraud in immigration paperwork. Her former husband is Ahmed Nur Said Elmi; they married in 2009 and divorced in 2017. The allegation that he is her brother has circulated for years; the reports reviewed here carry no substantiated evidence for it, and Omar denied it in 2016 as “absurd and offensive.”
The status. Omar has not been charged with any crime. Newsmax’s report states that the filing “does not establish that Omar used a fraudulent identity to take office.” Omar has made no admission of fraud. In the coverage reviewed for this story, Speaker Johnson has not responded publicly, the House has taken no action, and the Democratic Party has made no concession of her seat.
