The Baltimore Orioles have a new general manager. Jared Banner, 41, an assistant general manager with the Chicago Cubs and a specialist in player development, was hired Monday to work under Mike Elias, the Orioles’ president of baseball operations. ESPN’s Jeff Passan reported the hire on Monday, and the team announced it the same day; the move has been multiply corroborated since, including by MLB Trade Rumors and NBC Sports.
Banner’s background is the development side of the game — the part of a front office that turns draft picks and signees into major leaguers. He moves into the No. 2 chair in Baltimore’s front office, under Elias, who has run the Orioles’ baseball operations since 2018.
The hire, in brief
- Jared Banner, 41: Cubs assistant GM, player-development specialist
- Role: Orioles general manager, under president of baseball operations Mike Elias
- Reported by ESPN (Passan) Monday, October 19; announced by the team the same day
