The most-watched television program of premiere week came with an asterisk printed right on the number. 60 Minutes, CBS’s newsmagazine, now in its 59th season, drew 10.20 million viewers for its Sunday, October 4 episode — the No. 1 program of premiere week in Nielsen Live+Same Day, and up 1 percent from the year-ago episode. It also aired 51 minutes late in the Eastern and Central time zones, delayed behind an NFL doubleheader overrun that pushed CBS’s entire Sunday lineup — the strongest lead-in in television working at full strength. Both facts are the story, and CBS’s own release carries both.

The season’s other Sundays show the range. The Season 59 premiere itself, on September 13, drew 7.9 million viewers, down 21 percent from the prior year’s opener, as reported by the Status newsletter via Mediaite. The October 11 episode, with no football delay in front of it, fell to 6.06 million viewers, including 767,000 adults 25–54, and ranked 28th for its week. Then, in the week of October 12–18, the program charted again at 9.57 million viewers — No. 9 on Nielsen’s all-programming Top 10, a chart that includes sports. The spread between 6.06 million and 10.20 million across three Sundays is the cleanest measure available of what the NFL lead-in is worth to a Sunday institution.

The program itself is the longest-running primetime news show in American television, created by Don Hewitt in 1968 and built on reported segments by a correspondent roster that includes Lesley Stahl, Bill Whitaker and Jon Wertheim. It airs Sundays at 7 p.m. ET/PT — football permitting.

No renewal announcement attaches to a fixture like this, and none has been reported for a 60th season as of October 22; the program’s position is structural rather than negotiated season to season. On this desk’s chart it ranks first on the strength of the October 4 episode — with the inflation from the football lead-in stated where the number appears. The fairest summary is the one the numbers give themselves: with the game in front of it, 60 Minutes is still the biggest draw on broadcast television; without it, it is a strong Sunday performer in a league its younger rivals would happily join.
